A New story begins - Mixed Media Art Journal page

Updated: Feb 5
This page was created as a WonderingWabbit Design Team project.
The mixed media art journal page was built with layered paint and texture, allowing the process to stay intuitive and playful.
The pig illustration is by WonderingWabbit, and it became the starting point for the story and the mood of the page.
Materials used

Art Journal 8x8
Digistamp or other colouring image
Watercolour paper / heavy cardstock
Acrylic paint
Distress Oxide ink
Paste
Watercolours / Watercolour markers
Stencils
Stamps
Leftover scraps from previous projects
Process

I started the page by creating the background with acrylic paints, working freely and without a plan. Once dry, I added stamped texture using Distress Oxide ink and two different texture stamps.
Next, I applied paste through a stencil and spread a little extra paste around the page with a palette knife for added depth. After everything had fully dried, I brushed Distress Oxide ink from the outer edges inward, keeping the movement loose and organic.
To finish the background, I sprinkled water droplets across the surface and gently lifted them with a paper towel, creating soft textures and natural variation.

I printed the Piggy illustration on Bristol smooth cardstock and coloured it freely and loosely with watercolour markers. Once dry, I carefully cut the pig out and refined the edges.
Next, I gathered leftover scraps from previous projects and coloured them with coordinating Distress Oxide ink shades. After that, I arranged all the elements on the page and glued everything into place.
I printed a matching sentiment on regular printer paper — WonderingWabbit sets always include several sentiments designed to work beautifully with the illustrations. To finish the page, I darkened the edges slightly, stamped text with black Distress Oxide ink, and added final touches with black and white paint splatters.

Final Thoughts
This page came together intuitively and without pressure, a gentle way to begin both this project and this blog. Thank you for being here at the start of the journey. More pages and stories are already taking shape.
